Defining his story as ‘experimental,’ Jason Robertson believes that “Your sound is in your hands, as much as anything. It’s the way you pick, the way you hold the guitar, more than it is the amp or the guitar you use.” From this, we’re sure you could deduce that Robertson began his musical journey through the guitar. Born and based in Delhi, he was surrounded by people who inspired him to play ever since he was young. The 25-year-old artist started learning to play the guitar when he was just 10 years old by playing in the church and his school band. He also had his band in college and started performing at different venues and events.
After a short stint in the corporate world, he realized that his passion lies in music, so he decided to study the field further. He, therefore, went on to do his diploma in sound engineering and music production at Sri Aurobindo Centre Of Arts And Communication. Apart from being a guitarist, a music producer and an audio engineer, he is also working as a music teacher at a reputed school in Delhi. Shubh Saran, Aditya Balani, Julian Lage, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robben Ford, Mark Lettieri, and Cory Wong are some of his influences as an artist.
His latest release, ‘Voices Ft. Santur Kundu,’ is a story without words. Released on the 2nd of August, the song narrates a tale of frustration, rage, revenge, and feelings of powerlessness. It is a fight between the protagonist and the voices of the world that are pulling him down. “He wants to fight back, prove to everyone that he is strong but is left powerless and silenced in the end,” Robertson adds when asked to talk about the track. ‘Voices’ draws inspiration from jazz, rock, and Indian Classical Music.
It was composed, produced and mixed by Jason Robertson himself, with Santur Kundu on the vocals, and Nitin Hotchandani on the drums. It was mastered by Waves Kraft Mastering. The main theme was conceptualised back in 2021, the track was completed under the guidance of the faculty at Sri Aurobindo Centre of Arts and Communication, where it was also recorded.
The artist wishes to collaborate with Indian and foreign artists like A R Rahman and Snarky Puppy in the future and Savaal hopes he makes it possible.
