Ajuni | Artist Spotlight

Chandigarh-based singer-songwriter Anupreet Kaur aka Ajuni studied psychology during her early adulting years. She begun her journey into the world of music as a vocals and piano teacher in music schools across Delhi and Gurgaon. Later, she got involved in a few bands, playing the keys or singing. However, she always wanted to go out on her own as an artist and decided to do so in 2017 and begun putting together he first solo album. Her first single, ‘Utopia’ was released on October 18, 2020 and incorporates funky jazz beats paired with a trumpet solo as well, which happens to be Ajuni’s favorite instrument.

‘Dissociation’ is Ajuni’s second single, released on December 18. Compared with Utopia it is a dark and poetic track that talks about the psychological phenomenon of feeling disconnected from your body and surroundings due to a traumatic experience. Her lyrics describe dissociation as life passing you by, rather actually living it. While Ajuni sings and plays the keys on this number, she is accompanied by Mehtab Ali Niazi on the sitar who changes the tempo of the song entirely with the melodious hook. The track is ultimately intended to shed light on mental health issues like this, faced by so many people around us. Notably, Ajuni wrote most of the verses for Dissociation more than a decade ago during her college days.

Ajuni was a shy kid with social anxiety who preferred to spend her time indoors, which led to her writing poetry from the age of eight. By 11, she begun adding simple chords and melodies to the lyrics. While music is her first priority today, she says that psychology is her second love. Given the choice, she would like to collaborate with Baiju Dharmajan and Marcus Miller. Ajuni’s favorite quote is a thought provoking one – “There’s really no such thing as the voiceless. There are only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.” – Arundhati Roy
