Sayandeep Das, known as Cosvoyant, is an Indian musician with a passion for ambient, drone, and natural sounds. With two albums, three EPs, and four singles under his belt, Cosvoyant’s work is an expression of emotions inspired by the seasons in his hometown.
Cosvoyant’s latest album, Seasons, released on January 16, 2023, is a unique interpretation of the different seasons in Purulia, West Bengal. The album contains tracks that evoke emotions through natural sounds and ambient music.
Ballad of Rain and River, the first song in the album, is a blend of the monsoon season’s sounds and the river’s melodies. This track is an embodiment of Cosvoyant’s love for the monsoons and the river that flows through his hometown.
Epiphany of Autumn is another track that brings the album’s theme to life. Cosvoyant talks about the realization that comes with the arrival of autumn—the clear skies, the fresh winds, and the sudden truth that’s always been hiding in plain sight. This song is a perfect example of how Cosvoyant’s music is more than just sound; it’s an experience that transcends time and space.
Promise of Winter is a personal favourite for Cosvoyant. It’s a song about his love for winter and the peace it brings. The promise of winter coming back every year brings him hope, and this song reflects that. The music is soft and gentle, evoking a sense of calmness and tranquillity.
Deception of Spring is an ironic track that talks about the short-lived and misleading nature of spring. In Purulia, spring is a brief period of respite before the scorching summer sets in. The track reflects Cosvoyant’s emotional turmoil, the deception that comes with the hope of spring, and the suddenness of the hot summer.
Cosvoyant’s musical journey began after his 12th standard when he discovered ambient music by Brian Eno and Sigur Ros. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that he started his music career. With the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to move back to his hometown and pursue his musical aspirations.
Cosvoyant’s music is a personal story of his journey, his emotions, and his passion for ambient music. His influences include Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hammock, Aphex Twin, The Contortionist, Brian Eno, and Boards of Canada.
His favourite quote, “Heaven is all around translated into sound,” by Michael Hedges, is a perfect description of his music. Cosvoyant’s sound is all about the natural world and its many wonders. He creates his music by playing a few notes and then adding layers until he feels the music does justice to the idea he’s presenting.
Cosvoyant’s career highlights include dedicating two musical pieces to his friends who were getting married, creating two albums, three EPs, and four singles, and getting featured in the ONNO Compilation tapes, which sold out in Mumbai and Delhi. In June 2022, he performed his first live gig, a significant milestone for him.
Cosvoyant is open to collaboration with Indian and foreign artists. He’s expressed interest in working with Shubhodip Roy (Deeper Sines), Shadab Qadri (Riatsu), Varun Desai (5 Volt), Nills Frahm, Belle Brume Music, Knobs and Keys, and many others.
